PSALM OF MY LIFE

As we reflect on God, the question of time arises. What was God doing before I was born? Or what will God be doing when Iím not here? But one of the common experiences is of the continued presence of "God with us" all through our lives, good and bad.

  1. You, my God, are the strength of my life:
     you've been my companion through everything.

  2. Before I was born, you were there:
     you were present in the love of my parents.

  3. I can't understand my own beginning:
     for you are the mystery that's in all creating;

  4. you formed me from generations before me:
     as a unique gift, you made me what I am.

  5. Yet I'm always in the middle of conflicts:
     it feels as if the war goes on inside me;

  6. just as the world is wonderful and terrible:
     and you are on both sides all the time!

  7. In the darkness and misery I know you've been there:
     in Jesus, you've overcome everything that's evil.

  8. In relating to other people, your kingdom comes alive for me:
     in love, I can feel that you are with us.

  9. Some say you are not a family God:
     in order to know you fully, they say, I have to be alone;

  10. yet Jesus knew the conflicts of home and family:
     and your Spirit is known in relationships with others.

  11. How can I love you, unless I love my neighbours:
     your love is like that of my nearest and dearest.

  12. In our difficulties, we learn to cry for your help:
     in our joys, we recognise your continued presence.

  13. As sorrow approaches, we look to you for strength:
     in bereavement and loneliness, I find your firm support.

  14. At the end I know that you are with me:
     as you were in my beginning, so be close to me forever.
